Evidence for polybaric fractional crystallization in a continental arc: Hidden Lakes mafic complex, Sierra Nevada batholith, California

چکیده

Although the voluminous granitoids that constitute upper crust of Sierra Nevada batholith (California) have been investigated in detail, comparatively few studies focus on origin mafic bodies at similar crustal levels. Here, we present field and petrographic observations, geochronology, geochemistry Hidden Lakes complex central-eastern batholith. Our results show comprises norites, gabbros, monzondiorites, monzonites record fractional crystallization a hydrous (~ 3 wt% H2O), non-primitive basalt within (0.3 GPa) c. 95–96 Ma. To quantitatively model generation observed lithologies, construct two-stage polybaric based cumulate melt-like bulk-rock compositions. In first step, fractionation primitive, mantle-derived > 30 km depth, generating dominantly pyroxenite cumulates. The evolution derivative melt (67% mass remaining) is then modeled to fractionate 12 depth produce lithologies complex. Extension this higher-silica compositions (> 65 SiO2) replicates granodiorite batholith, suggesting could be an important process for arc granitoid melts. differentiation continental arcs debated, as observations indicate abundant lower while experimental data suggest high-pressure basalts cannot non-peraluminous batholiths. supports one potential mechanism resolve inconsistency.

Hornblende Gabbro Sill Complex at Onion Valley, California, and a Mixing Origin for the Sierra Nevada Batholith

The steep crest of the Sierra Nevada, Califor-nia, near Onion Valley, exposes natural cross sections through a mafic intrusive complex that formed as part of the Mesozoic Sierra Nevada batholith. Sheeted sills of hornblende gabbro to hornblende diorite, individually as thick as 1.5 m, form the upper 200 to 300 m of the complex. Thicker, multiply-injected sills, as well as mafic stocks, lie unde...

Chronology of pluton emplacement and regional deformation in the southern Sierra Nevada batholith, California

Cretaceous plutonic rocks of the southern Sierra Nevada batholith between latitudes 35.5°N and 36°N lie in a strategic position that physically links shallow, subvolcanic levels of the batholith to lower-crustal (~35 km deep) batholithic rocks. This region preserves an oblique crustal section through the southern Sierra Nevada batholith. Prior studies have produced large U/Pb zircon data sets f...

Glaciations of the Sierra Nevada, California, USA

The Sierra Nevada is a c. 4000 m range of mountains paralle1 to the North American Pacific Coast that was repeatedly glaciated during the climatic fluchrations of the Quatemary. The glacial record on the eastem side of the range includes eight named Pleistocene glaciations and stadials: McGee, Sherwin, Casa Diablo, Mono Basin, Tahoe, Tenaya, Tioga and Recess Peak, as well as the Neoglacial Matt...

Phase relationships of Itype granite with H2O to 35 kilobars The Dinkey Lakes biotitegranite from the Sierra Nevada Batholith

The Dinkey Lakes biotite-granite from the Sierra Nevada batholith was reacted (with varying percentages of H20 in sealed platinum capsules) in a piston-cylinder apparatus between 10 and 35 kbar. The results were combined with the results from previously published experiments to provide comprehensive phase relationships for an I-type granite: a P-T diagram with excess H20; isobaric T-X•2o diagra...

Buoyancy sources for a large, unrooted mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, California Evidence from xenolith thermobarometry

Xenoliths hosted by Cenozoic volcanic flows and plugs from the Central Sierra Nevada and Eastern Sierra Nevada, Owens Valley, and Inyo Mountains were studied for petrography and thermobarometry. The Central Sierra Nevada suite consists of abundant lower crustal feldspathic granulites, garnet clinopyroxenites, and mantle-derived peridotites and garnet websterites. Mafic crustal assemblages occur...
